This is recommended for patients with severe gum disease or periodontitis, if it cannot be improved with antibiotics or root planing and scaling. Once you are prepped for surgery, the doctor cleans the roots of the teeth and repairs bone damage caused by gum disease after the area is anaesthetised using a local anaesthetic. The gum flap will be sewn back in to place and covered with dressing. The bone may be smoothened, reshaped, or repaired.
Although the procedure takes a couple of hours to be performed, strictly following the home care instructions given by a dentist helps for a speedy recovery in only a few days.
